The Road to PyWeek — Up at One in the Morning

Yes, it’s one twenty AM here in Michigan, at least according to my lappy’s clock.

I’m gonna get a cup of coffee and work on my XML parser.

Mmm… Parser… šŸ˜€

I’ve got a test image, too, but I haven’t tested it just yet, because I don’t have a parser.

My images are coded in a de-facto method of storing bitmaps in XML that allows the parser, or rather the code the parser with feeding the image into to decide the actual colors in the image at runtime, with multiple sets of default colors defined in the image’s tags.

In short: This game’s gonna be real cool šŸ˜€

Glad to hear you’re going to try for Pyweek #8. I also attempted Pyweek #7, but got bogged down with work and real life. That will probably happen again, but thats part of the fun! šŸ™‚

So I’m reading through your blog, and you mention storing bmp data with predefined colors in XML? Like a palette based image block inside of a set of XML?

You might consider writing a binary format/parser that does something more like

[header with info][img offset #1][img colors offset #1][img offset #2][img colors offset #2]…..etc. then [file data #1][file data#2]…[file color #2]

This way your custom image parser does not need to go through excessive string compare functions, and everything is easily accessible and in your own format šŸ™‚ XML is really nice for having multiple level designers & testers, but its not very practical when it comes to huge data sets, like a 20mb image & color data file.

But if you do decide to go with the XML parsing, its always a learning experience! Good luck on Pyweek!
